Project Teammates: The Future of AI-Driven Warfare

Ubisoft Teammates

Ubisoft "Teammates"

Ubisoft is testing a new game format using generative AI technology, according to a Ubisoft newsroom post. They say that this is a First Person Shooter (FPS) type game. It was created by the Ubisoft Paris R&D team that previously created the “Neo NPC” technology. This is called “Teammates”.

The special feature here is that instead of pressing buttons, the player controls the AI members of their team by speaking into the microphone, that is, giving voice commands.

👥 The Characters

When it comes to characters, there are 3 characters here.

  • 🛡️ Sofia and Pablo: In this game, the AI members who fight on the same team with the user. Here, they will even be able to understand complex voice commands such as “Go cover the left flank”, “Suppress that enemy”, or “follow me stealthy”.
  • ⚙️ Jasper: This is the assistant in this game. You can ask for details about the game or change the settings of the game by giving voice instructions.

Technology & Context

🧠 GenAI Middleware

Although the “Neo NPC” technology was initially focused on communicating with AI characters, the “Teammates” project has been used as a real game.

The goal is to test whether AI characters can respond without delay even during fast-paced combat in the game.

For this, Ubisoft has created a special piece of software called “GenAI Middleware” that will act as a bridge between the Game Engine and Various Large Language Models (LLMs).

🌍 Environment & Future

The AI characters here will not only understand words, but also recognize the environment in the game. For example, when you say “Hide behind that crate”, they will recognize the environment and hide accordingly.

By bridging the gap between large language models and real-time game mechanics, Ubisoft is creating characters that speak better and act better.

If this middleware is successfully integrated into engines like Snowdrop and Anvil, the next generation of open-world games will be bigger than we can ever imagine. They will be infinitely more alive.
